Washing: |
| |
|
•
catch water that's usually wasted while you wait for shower
water to reach the right temperature - keep a bucket in the
shower to collect it and use this water for your pot plants
and garden
• turn off the tap when soaping hands |
| Water
saving tips for the laundry: |
| |
|
•
look for washing machines with the best water and energy rating
- can cut your water usage by 55%
• only put on a full load and match the water level to
the size of the load
• reduce your clothes washing by one wash per week
• divert water from your laundry (known as greywater)
to water your garden |
| Water
saving tips for gardens/lawns: (always check
the current restrictions before watering) |
| |
|
•
use mulch – it can help to suppress weeds and can keep
up to 70% more water in the soil
• let your lawn go brown – it will rejuvenate when
it rains
• limit your lawn area and use drought tolerant grass
• when cutting your lawn, raise the lawn mower blade to
at least three inches (nine and a half centimetres) - a higher
cut lawn encourages grass roots to grow deeper, shades the root
system and holds soil moisture
• install a rainwater tank - use collected water for your
garden – visit our friends at
www.queenslandwidetanks.com.au for great deals on tanks
• regularly check your outdoor taps, pipes and plumbing
fixtures for leaks – if you find leaks call All Districts

saving tips for Pools: |
| |
|
•
fit a pool cover - reduces water lost and evaporation by up
to 97%
• install a new water-saving pool filter
• cover your pool when it's windy as evaporation levels
increase with wind
• capture backwash from pool filters and reuse on gardens
|
| Water
saving tips for Patios and Driveways: |
| |
|
•
use a broom, brush or rake to sweep and clean outdoor paths
and paving
• install a rainwater tank and if necessary use this water
to clean down hard surfaces |
Checking for leaks using your water
meter:
Take a meter reading last thing at night and first thing the
next morning before using the water. If there has been any
change in the reading you could have a leak.
Did
you know a dripping tap can waste 30 to 200 litres of water
per day?
• turn taps off properly, check washers for wear and
attend to leaking taps
• A leaking toilet can waste 60,000 litres of water
per year. Check for silent leaks by adding food colouring
in the cistern. If the colouring begins to appear in the bowl
after 15 minutes, the cistern is leaking and the valve must
be repaired.
